Overview
Nyalenda Youngstars, in collaboration with SHOFCO, successfully organized a two-day School-Based Community Tournament held on 21st and 22nd February 2026 at St. Mary’s School in Nyalenda, Kisumu, Kenya. The tournament was guided by the theme “Bridging Knowledge and Skills” , which aimed to promote holistic youth development by creating a platform where students could combine athletic engagement with opportunities for intellectual interaction, mentorship, and personal growth. The activity brought together students, teachers, coaches, community members, and youth development partners from across the region to celebrate talent, promote teamwork, and encourage positive youth participation in structured activities.
Preparations for the tournament began several weeks in advance through coordination between Nyalenda Youngstars and SHOFCO, alongside engagement with participating schools to confirm attendance and organize teams. Twelve schools from the region were invited to take part in the tournament, each sending teams accompanied by teachers and school representatives. The event sought not only to provide a competitive sporting environment but also to strengthen collaboration among schools, community organizations, and youth-focused initiatives while fostering values such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, and mutual respect among the students.
First Day
The first day of the tournament commenced with the arrival and registration of participating schools at St. Mary’s School grounds early in the morning. Teams were welcomed by members of the organizing committee and volunteers who guided them through the registration process and orientation on the day’s program. Once all teams had assembled, a brief opening session was conducted where representatives from Nyalenda Youngstars and SHOFCO officially welcomed participants and emphasized the purpose of the tournament. During the opening remarks, the organizers highlighted the importance of sports as a tool for youth empowerment and social development. They noted that while academic knowledge remains important for young people, participation in sports and other extracurricular activities contributes significantly to the development of life skills such as resilience, teamwork, communication, and leadership. The speakers also encouraged the students to compete fairly, demonstrate respect for one another, and use the opportunity to learn from their peers from other schools.
Following the opening session, the tournament matches began with the preliminary rounds. The participating teams were grouped into different pools, and the matches were scheduled throughout the day to ensure that each team had the opportunity to compete. The games were characterized by enthusiasm, energy, and a strong display of teamwork among the students. Teachers and community members who attended the event actively supported the teams, creating a lively and encouraging atmosphere around the playing field. Throughout the day, the organizing team ensured that the matches ran smoothly by coordinating the fixtures, providing referees, and managing the time schedule to allow all teams to participate as planned.
In addition to the sporting activities, the tournament created informal opportunities for interaction and exchange among students from different schools. During breaks between matches, participants engaged in conversations and shared experiences about school life, sports, and personal aspirations. These interactions contributed to building friendships and strengthening social connections among the students beyond the boundaries of their individual schools. The presence of teachers and youth mentors also provided opportunities for guidance and encouragement, reinforcing the importance of balancing academic pursuits with participation in constructive recreational activities.
As the day progressed, teams competed with determination to secure positions in the next stages of the tournament. By the end of the first day, the preliminary matches had successfully identified the teams that would advance to the semi-final stage. The organizing committee concluded the day’s activities by reviewing the match outcomes and confirming the schedule for the second day of the tournament. Participants left the venue with anticipation for the upcoming semi-final and final matches.
Second Day
The second day of the tournament began with the arrival of the teams that had qualified from the preliminary stage. The day’s program focused on the semi-final matches, the final match, and the closing ceremony. The atmosphere was vibrant as students, teachers, and community members gathered once again at the St. Mary’s School grounds to witness the concluding stage of the competition. The semi-final matches were highly competitive, with teams demonstrating improved coordination, strategy, and determination as they sought to secure a place in the final round.
The final match was the highlight of the tournament and attracted significant attention from participants and spectators alike. The teams competing in the final displayed impressive skill, teamwork, and resilience, reflecting the dedication and effort they had invested throughout the tournament. The match was closely contested and served as a powerful demonstration of the talent and potential among the participating students. The spirit of sportsmanship remained evident throughout the game, with players supporting and encouraging one another even during moments of intense competition.
Following the conclusion of the final match, a closing ceremony was held to recognize and appreciate the efforts of all participants and partners who contributed to the success of the tournament. During the ceremony, the organizing team expressed gratitude to the participating schools for their commitment and cooperation throughout the two-day event. Appreciation was also extended to the teachers, volunteers, referees, and community members who supported the activity and ensured that it was conducted in an organized and safe environment. The winning teams were acknowledged for their performance, while all participating schools were recognized for their active participation and sportsmanship.
The tournament achieved several positive outcomes for the participating students and the wider community. It provided a safe and structured environment where young people could engage in sports while building confidence and interpersonal skills. The event also strengthened relationships between schools and community-based youth organizations, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in supporting youth development. Additionally, the tournament encouraged students to appreciate the value of teamwork, discipline, and persistence.
Challenges
Despite the overall success of the event, a few challenges were experienced during the tournament. The high level of participation meant that the match schedule was quite tight, making it necessary to carefully manage time to ensure all matches were completed within the planned period. Coordinating teams and managing logistics at peak match times also required significant effort from the organizing team and volunteers. Some schools experienced minor delays in arrival during the first day, which slightly affected the early match schedule. However, these challenges were effectively managed through coordination among the organizers and did not significantly affect the overall success of the event.
The experience gained from organizing the tournament has provided valuable lessons for future activities of a similar nature. Increasing the duration of the tournament or expanding it into a larger community sports event could provide additional opportunities for participation and engagement. Strengthening early communication with participating schools and increasing the number of volunteers to support coordination would also help improve logistical efficiency in future events.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the School-Based Community Tournament organized by Nyalenda Youngstars in partnership with SHOFCO was a successful and impactful initiative that brought together students, schools, and community members in a shared effort to promote youth development. Through sports and interactive engagement, the tournament provided students with an opportunity to showcase their talents, build friendships, and develop essential life skills. The event demonstrated the power of sports as a unifying tool for education, social development, and community engagement, reinforcing the commitment of the organizing partners to continue supporting initiatives that empower young people and contribute to building stronger and more resilient communities.
